Au Pair of the Year Nominee - Bianca from Germany

Bianca began her Au Pair experience with the Hall family in January 2009. In the year that she has been with the family, she has surpassed all expectations - not only providing quality childcare, but also flawlessly integrating in the Host Family. To thank and honor Bianca for all of her work and her extraordinary personality, the Hall family nominated her for the IAPA Au Pair of the Year Award. Their nomination letter, which truly shows what makes Bianca an exemplary Au Pair is below:

"Our family isn't special.   Other than having three boys and one girl, we're pretty normal.   We're a typical American family living in suburbia.   There's never a dull moment in our house.   Even with our dogs and cats.   What is rather special is this tall, long blonde (right now?any moment it could change) haired woman with more piercings than fingers that scurries in and out of the house with behaving children in tow.   That woman is our au pair, Bianca, and she is quite possibly the best thing to have ever happened to our family.

Bianca comes from a family where she's an only child.   We thought for sure she would turn us down for an interview, as did a few previous au pairs, because of the number of children we have.   Not only did she agree to have an interview with us, but she wasn't put off by the number of kids she would have to watch every day.   See, we knew she was something special when we saw her picture on CHI Au Pair's website.   We saw the look in the eyes of the child in the picture with Bianca and that child was genuinely happy.   Eyes never lie.   Bianca's eyes glimmered and the little boy's eyes beamed.   When we talked to her on the phone the first time, we were all a little nervous, but we all felt an instant connection.   We never expected Bianca to "pick up" on our banter, our sarcasm, and certainly didn't expect her to dish it back out to us, but she did.   And we were smitten.   It was love at first sight, but we hadn't "seen" her yet?just talked.   When we followed up with her later that weekend and she told us she'd like to come to our family, we didn't know whether to admit her to a hospital or throw a party!  When Bianca arrived in our home, she threw herself immediately into being part of the family.   She took control of the household and put us in line.   Kathryn, our youngest and only girl, was a screamer.   If she wasn't in my or her daddy's arms, she screamed.   Dogs could howl with her screams.   And then Bianca took her.   Kathryn cried a bit, but she stopped.   She grew so accustomed to Bianca that Bianca's arms and hips were added to the list of acceptable people to hold her within a few short days.   Not only that, but she developed a napping / eating schedule for the baby that even I as her mother couldn't figure out.

Bianca quickly established a work / school routine for her and the kids and pretty soon our kids were actually finishing their homework!   As two working parents with four children ages 8 and under, it was difficult enough to make sure all kids schoolwork was completed, papers signed, shuttling to after-school activities, and keeping our sanity in check.   Bianca turned our lives upside down with her schedules and assertiveness.   The boys' homework was completed and ready for us to check when we got home.   School papers to be signed were lined up on the counter according to child.   She dropped the kids off and picked them from the activities that were immediately after-school so that we could accomplish a full day at work.   She would get dinner prepped for the entire family so that when we got home from work we just had to cook it.   She opened up so many hours in the evening for us to be able to spend time with our kids.   That time is so precious to us and without Bianca we would have no idea who needed what and when.

Bianca is very mature for her age and we have never experienced a time with her when we didn't trust her.   She is respectful of us and we are of her.   She respects our children and they look up to her.   If you ask our boys what they like most about Bianca they have a resounding answer of, "we have fun with her!"   Next in line is that "she takes care of me" and "she does homework with me."   As a parent it's the most comforting feeling knowing that your child is with someone you trust completely with their wellbeing.   We took a chance on a young woman from another country and she took a chance on us.   No one knew that the stars aligned with this match and that a new family member was created.   We know that we are not a special family, but Bianca is everything to us and this nomination is the least we can do to make sure people out there realize that we received the most special au pair in the world."

Au Pair Sabrina Urrutia Understands the Importance of Volunteering!

Sabrina Urrutia understands what it means to lend a hand.  The 22 year-old from La Serena, Chile is currently participating in the CHI Au Pair USA program, living with a host family in Vienna, VA.  Sabrina previously participated in CHI's Work and Travel program, and enjoyed it so much that she wanted to continue her cultural studies.  She decided to join the au pair program because she loves children, and was interested in learning more about US culture.  She especially wanted to know what it was like to live with a host family, and experience daily American life from the inside.  Sabrina also felt this program would be a chance for her to take a break from school and figure out what she wanted to do with her future.

One aspect of Sabrina's future that will always be there is her desire to volunteer.  Sabrina first began volunteering in her native Chile, lending a hand with 'Un Techo Para Chile' (A Roof For Chile) in 2005, an organization that builds low cost housing for people in need.  She followed that up in 2006 by joining 'Adopta un Hermano' (Adopt-a-Brother), which matches high risk children with college students who can provide a positive influence in their lives.  Sabrina met with her 10-year-old 'hermano' Brian twice a week, working on homework together, playing with other kids and talking about their lives.  She's proud that she was able to be a role model for Brian.

In 2007, her organization of choice was a local orphanage.  While there, she was able to participate in the adoption of one of the children she supervised, an extremely powerful and rewarding experience.  She describes seeing the new mother holding her adopted child for the first time as being very beautiful, and something that will stay with her for the rest of her life.  She also gave her time to a charity dining hall that offered low cost meals to college students, before coming to CHI.

One of the things that draws Sabrina so strongly to volunteering, is that it hasn't caught on as much in Chile as it has here in America, and she would like to do her small part to help change that.  Volunteering isn't as ingrained in the culture there and people don't feel that they have time to help out between work and school.  She also feels that people back home who haven't volunteered do not realize that there is a huge reward when you volunteer, and you end up getting back so much more than you give.  Sabrina knows that a very small action can make a big change in someone's life.  She would like to be an example to inspire others to get involved, as well.

Sabrina feels volunteering has been extremely rewarding.  She has learned so much about herself as well as others.  She has made wonderful friendships that continue to last through the years.  She also appreciates that volunteering allows her to learn new skills as well as improve her current skills.  Looking forward, Sabrina plans to return home to Chile soon, and rejoin 'Un Techo Para Chile'.  She would like to remind you that one person, one home, one child, one tree - you can make a difference.  Sabrina hopes her story will help others find some time to volunteer as well.

National Volunteer Week - April 19-25, 2009

Volunteering is a long and honored tradition in the United States. Every year millions of Americans donate their time and energy to help out their communities. National Volunteer Week was created with the spirit of these people in mind. Since 1974, the United States has dedicated one week each year to honor their generosity and selflessness, and encourage others to follow in their footsteps.

The theme for this year's National Volunteer Week is "Celebrating People in Action". This is your chance to get involved and help out your community. CHI would like to do its part to help you join the cause. To encourage as many people as possible to do what they can, CHI is sponsoring a contest.

We would like you to volunteer and share your story. Please use the helpful links below to find a volunteer activity in your area, and lend a hand. Whether it's helping out at a soup kitchen or cleaning up your local park - we would like to hear about it! Write a short essay describing your experience and what it meant to you. We will choose two of our favorite stories to be featured on our website, and the authors will each receive a prize.

Please e-mail submissions to Chiara at chichiara@chinet.org no later than June 1st. Please include at least one photo to illustrate your experience. We look forward to this being a fun and rewarding activity for everyone involved. Good luck!

Hosting a male Au Pair

There's a stereotype that continues to persist when it comes to men and childcare. But contrary to this common belief, men have made, and continue to make, terrific Au Pairs. Recently, a young man from Brazil was matched with a family in Michigan. As both parties attest, it was the right match.

Twins Zachary and Luke, and their younger brother Nicholas, are happily playing in the snow covered front yard of their Michigan home on a crisp December day. While parents Mike and Stephanie Orrico are away at work for the day, neither of them is worried about their children, because they know that they are in the capable hands of the family's au pair. Rodrigo Amado Garcia Silva is a 20 year old young man from Niteroi, Brazil. He has been the Orrico family's au pair for the last nine months, and has done a wonderful job caring for the children and endearing himself to the family.

Mike and Stephanie Orrico were drawn to CHI Au Pair USA because they valued the intimacy and security of having their childcare provider living with them as a member of the family. When it came time to decide on who their au pair would be, they both came to the conclusion that a male au pair would fit their needs best. Having three young boys with a lot of energy provided the need for someone who could keep up with them. Rodrigo fit this profile perfectly, and his love of the outdoors was an added bonus. Mike and Stephanie were impressed by the maturity he displayed for his age, as well as his enthusiasm for the experience.

Rodrigo's hometown of Niteroi is located along Brazil's Atlantic coast near Rio de Janeiro. Rodrigo had been attending college at Rio's Federal University studying environmental engineering and developed an interest in experiencing other cultures on a first hand basis. This interest drew him to the CHI Au Pair USA program. Rodrigo was specifically curious about the every day life of an average American family, and becoming an au pair would allow him to truly immerse himself in that every day family life.

Rodrigo quickly developed a good chemistry with his host family and affection for the children. Some of the fun activities that Rodrigo enjoys with the children include arts and crafts, outdoor activities like biking, soccer and swimming, and visiting the local library. Rodrigo knows how important the time is that he spends with the children, and takes his responsibilities very seriously.

Mike and Stephanie describe a fun and enjoyable past nine months with Rodrigo. They praise his willingness to help in any situation, and marvel at his desire to mow the lawn so he can be outside in the sun. Often when he is out in the sun, Mike and Stephanie laugh as all three of their boys, like ducks, follow him and imitate his every move. The boys really seem to look up to Rodrigo as if he were an older brother.

Rodrigo has really enjoyed his time as an au pair in the United States, and feels that he has learned and grown a great deal. While he will be sad to eventually have to say goodbye to his American family, he will look back on his participation in the CHI Au Pair USA program with fondness. He looks forward to continuing his university studies back home in Brazil as well as continuing to explore other cultures. The Orricos as well, will miss Rodrigo when he leaves in March, but will fondly remember the time they spent getting to know their new Brazilian friend. This male au pair was the perfect fit for the Orrico family.

Au Pair Makes a Donation to Locks of Love

With the simple act of getting a haircut, CHI Au Pair Angela Fiore was able to extend her care beyond her host family's children, and do something to help children around the world

Italian au pair Angela Fiore enjoys many of the typical activities of a CHI Au Pair USA participant.  She spends time with her host family, plays games with the children, and explores her new American surroundings.  She's also done one other thing, however, that's not so typical.  Taking inspiration from her host family, she decided to cut her hair, and donate it to Locks of Love. This simple, yet meaningful, act of charity has helped make Angela stand out as an extraordinary au pair participant.

Angela, 26, enrolled in the CHI Au Pair USA program because of her love for children and her desire to improve her English. She considered applying to an American college, but decided against it because she thought that being away from her home town of Torino , by herself, would be too lonely. She was thrilled when she came across the CHI Au Pair USA program. Angela's younger sister was already living with her own host family in Japan and let Angela know how wonderful it was. Two months into her program, Angela completely agrees. Angela says "Live with a family. It is the best way to learn about a language and a culture".

Angela lives with the Williams family from Fredericksburg , Virginia. Angela has been entrusted with the care of the family's two daughters, Madeline and Rosa.   Angela reports that the Williams' really see her as a member of the family, and she feels like she is fitting right in. They have done a good job of helping her adjust to her new life in America. She has made such a connection with Madeline and Rosa that the girls went out of their way to cheer her up when she was homesick. They gave her a few small gifts and told her that they would feel the same way if they were in her shoes. Angela feels lucky that the Williams family chose her to be their au pair.

Soon after Angela arrived Mrs. Williams and her daughters went to the hair salon. The young Rosa returned home with her hair in a bag.   Angela accompanied her host family to the post office where they mailed Rosa 's hair to Locks of Love, "a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children".   Their mission is to " return a sense of self, confidence and normalcy to children suffering from hair loss by utilizing donated ponytails to provide the highest quality hair prosthetics to financially disadvantaged children ". www.locksoflove.com

Angela was struck by the kindness shown by her host family, and couldn't wait to share the information with her own mother back in Italy .   Needless to say, Angela's mom thought it was a fantastic idea. She pointed out that her daughter had long and beautiful hair and could do that same thing that Rosa did. This gave Angela the courage that she needed to step into a hair salon and say "I want to donate my hair to a beautiful child that may need it". Today, Angela has no regrets whatsoever, and even inspired her sister and her friend to donate their hair as well. Angela continues to enjoy her time with her host family and is extremely grateful that little Rosa was able to be a catalyst for such generosity.

The Ripple Effect Of Hosting

Have you ever considered hosting a student or an au pair from another country? Someone who will live in your home as a member of your family? Are you aware that this experience will probably change your life and your child's life forever?

Before Tom and I began to host, we found ourselves reluctant. We had two little girls, 4 and 7. We treasured our privacy. We lived in a small house with no extra money. Our curiosity got the better of us and we decided to try hosting in spite of our reluctance. We selected a girl from Japan who seemed to have quite good English. Our children were beside themselves with joy. Suddenly they had a big sister who would play with them. Since her English was not as good as we thought, the girls found they could take care of her like a little sister. On the second day, she began to play cards with them. It was a universal language. Our Japanese girl, Chiharu, who was 23, began to blend with our family. In just three short weeks, she found loving understanding from my children who had never known a person from another country. My husband, yes, Tom Areton, was staying up with our "new daughter" until 1AM asking her all manner of questions about Japan like "How do the Japanese pay their bills?" or "What does your father do for a living?" Our sweet student tried valiantly to answer him. We discovered that the Japanese live very differently from the Americans. This was such a delightful discovery that we found ourselves fascinated. Our children too were utterly intrigued by her unique values. One of them said, "Your mom and dad don't hug or give each other a kiss in front of you in Japan?" Her mother and father showed affection in front of the family. Needless to say, we were all hooked and we were all in love. She had quickly become a family treasure. Our loving relationship has lasted for many years after she returned home.

Thirty two years later we are still hosting students, now from all over the world. I had a third daughter six years after we first started hosting and she grew up with two to three Japanese children, a whole family from Brooklyn who now lived in Japan and hardly spoke English, three Slovak girls, and a Mongolian who went to high school here. There were many other short-term visitors from many countries. Even today, as I write these lines, we are hosting a young Slovak family downstairs in our au pair quarters. It is their 4th year with us and they now have a little two year old girl! Even more amazing, because of our experience with Chiharu and some others, we decided to start CHI.

CHI's 200,000 hosting families, some of whom have had almost a hundred students coming through their welcoming homes, can also attest to international friendships that go on for decades. We know the ripple effect hosting a foreign person can have on our lives. Some of our children have become diplomats. Some work in the travel business. A few have married people from others countries. Many have taken opportunities to travel. A great many visit their students abroad, attend their weddings, and welcome them back on their return visits. Most importantly, families who host begin to see the world through "different" eyes. By becoming more tolerant and understanding of other cultures and by cherishing their world-wide friendships, they become better citizens of our own country.

CHI has many programs that bring young students to our shores. Our Au Pair program allows young people to live with a family, attend classes, and care for the children while the mother is working. Group Homestays bring high school students in the spring and summer for up to 4 weeks. These students study English conversation and interact with their host families in the evenings and on weekends. Some students attend our high schools for 1 or 2 semesters. These young people literally become members of their new American families and of their high schools. Overseas University students come as Interns, training in American businesses. Even some of these stay with a family when they first arrive in order to learn about how we live.

And what happened to our 23 year old Chiharu we hosted 32 years ago? She became an English teacher, married another Japanese student from the same homestay group who became a neurosurgeon and they have two daughters, both studying medicine.

Happy End, indeed!

Au Pair doing great

Going into Winter, we are still expanding and receiving more and more Au Pair applications from different countries. We recently placed our first Hungarian, Uzbek and Filipina. We are continuing to receive more and more applicants from exotic countries such as Kazakhstan as well. Our extension rate is increasing and ½ to 2/3 of our Au Pairs are extending for a second year with either a new family or the same family as before. We are also expanding our territories to Santa Fe, NM; West Palm Beach, FL; Hartford, CT; Long Island, NY and Las Vegas, NV.
